Bafana Bafana international Anele Ngcongca has died after being involved in a car accident in the early hours of Monday morning.
Ngcongca, 33, had just completed a move to AmaZulu this month after leaving Mamelodi Sundowns at the end of the 2019/20 Premier Soccer League season in which the Brazilians won a domestic treble.
The Cape Town-born defender played a key role in Sundowns’ continued success over the last few seasons, most notably winning three league titles, the 2016 Caf Champions League and subsequent Caf Super Cup during his time at the club.
Ngcongca joined the Brazilans from Belgium Pro League giants KRC Genk in August 2016 after spending the 2015/16 campaign on-loan at French club Troyes.
During the nine years he spent at Genk, the South African right-back made 279 appearances, establishing himself as a club legend while also being named in the club’s Team of the Century.
Ngcongca played over 50 games for Bafana Bafana and was part of South Africa’s 2010 FIFA World Cup team on home soil, starting a 2-1 win over France in Bloemfontein.
