The new seasons of both the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup are well and truly underway after a combined 16 matches in the preliminary round across the continent on Saturday 28 November, with Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien recording the headline result.

CSS claimed an emphatic 5-0 away win over Zanzibar’s Malndege – with a hat-trick from Firas Chaouat – to put one foot into the next round of the Champions League. The same can be said of Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy, who recorded a 4-0 home win over Comoros’ Zilimadjou, while Sudan’s Al Hilal secured a 1-0 away triumph at Uganda’s Vipers.

There were also key wins for Rwanda’s APR at home to Kenyan side Gor Mahia, Zimbabwe’s FC Platinum away to Costa do Sol in Mozambique, and Libyan side Al Ahly Benghazi have advanced without kicking a ball after Ethiopia’s Mekelle 70 Enderta did not honour their scheduled match in Cairo.

In the Confed Cup, the key result was Senegalese side ASC Diaraf defeating Nigeria’s Kano Pillars 3-1 at home thanks to strikes from Joseph Bassene, Mohamed Diallo and Pape Ndiaye – though Sai Masu Gida still have a foothold in the tie thanks to David Ebuka’s away goal.

The other Nigerian side, Rivers United, also fell to defeat as they succumbed 2-1 away to Futuro Kings in Equatorial Guinea, while the biggest wins of the day came from Al Ittihad Tripoli and Tanzania’s Namungo, who trumped Somalia’s Horseed 4-1 and South Sudan’s Al Rabita 3-0 respectively.

The preliminary round, first-leg matches for both competitions will be completed on Sunday 29 November. The return legs will be held next weekend, 4-6 December.
