Papa Bouba Diop wrote himself into the history books by scoring Senegal’s first FIFA World Cup goal.

World football was rocked by his sudden passing at the age of 42 on Sunday, with many recalling his iconic moment at the 2002 showpiece in South Korea/ Japan.

The Lions of Teranga went into the opening match of the tournament versus reigning champions France as clear underdogs, but inspired by head coach Bruno Metsu and fuelled by an unwavering desire the African nation caused one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history by claiming a 1-0 win in Seoul.

Diop scored the only goal of the game, sweeping home from close range on the half-hour mark following a weaving run down the left flank from El Hadji Diouf.

Draws versus Denmark (1-1) and Uruguay, in which Diop scored a brace in a 3-3 draw, would follow before another memorable result in the Round of 16 where Senegal would defeat Sweden 2-1. The West African nation’s run came to an end versus Turkey at the quarter-final stage, but their performance at the tournament is still fondly remembered.
