Caleb Porter, head coach of Major League Soccer club Columbus Crew, has hailed the influence of Ghanaian defender Jonathan Mensah, labelling the 30-year-old an “unbelievable person”.
Mensah has been a key figure for Crew in their outstanding MLS season thus far, with the Ohio side defeating the New England Patriots 1-0 in the Eastern Conference final this past weekend to advance into the MLS Cup final on Sunday, December 13.
“I think he’s an unbelievable person, one of the best people you’ll ever meet, just big heart, really good guy, really special leader,” Porter said of Mensah, as quoted by Ghana Soccernet.
“He hasn’t seen his wife in 10 months and I couldn’t imagine being 10 months without my wife. The fact he goes home alone every day and comes to training and rolls the sleeves up, he’s just unbelievable.
“I joke with him he’s going to be the president of Ghana one day. He has that type of quality.”
Mensah was the only African and only Crew player named in the MLS Best XI for the 2020 season. He will hope to lead his team to a second MLS title, following their maiden triumph back in 2008.
