Matip joins Gomez & Van Dijk in Liverpool injury list

Former Cameroon international Joel Matip has been added to English giants Liverpool FC’s growing injury list.

The towering central defender was taken off at half-time during the Reds’ 1-1 draw with Fulham in a Premier League match on Sunday after suffering from a back spasm.

Prior to the game, Liverpool announced that Guinea captain and midfielder Naby Keita would miss the game after picking an injury.

However, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is hopeful Matip will be available for Wednesday’s Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur.

The German manager provided a positive update on the centre-back’s condition.

“Joel Matip has a spasm in his back. We will see. In the moment, nothing else,” said Klopp on the club’s official website.

“He got already treatment, will get treatment and we will see. I think there’s a chance for Wednesday. [It’s not that bad] in the moment, no.”

Liverpool players such as Thiago Alcantara, Virgil Van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Diogo Jota are all nursing long-term injuries at the moment.

Matip has played six matches in the Premier League this season and netted once in the process.
