Nigeria under-23 international Taiwo Awoniyi says he is patiently waiting for his chance to play for the Super Eagles.
The bulky centre forward has been in top form in the German Bundesliga lately for Union Berlin where is on loan from English champions Liverpool FC.
Awoniyi has registered three goals in his last five matches in the competition as he establishes himself as a key player for Berlin.
The 23-year-old has played for Nigeria’s under-17, under-20 and under-23 national teams and he is now keen to impress Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr.
“The national team question for me is a big thing. I remember in the U17 and U20 days, the pride to wear the national colours is massive,” Awoniyi told Brila FM.
“I understand that the country has talents in abundance, But I also have to stick to my principle of time and season and continue to work hard.
“When it’s my time I’ll take the opportunity and understand it for what it is.”
Awoniyi represented Nigeria at the 2013 FIFA Under-17 World Cup and went on to win the tournament, scoring four goals during the competition.
The Ilorin-born player also represented Nigeria at the 2015 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in New Zealand after winning the 2015 African U-20 Championship in Senegal.
He scored a brace on his debut for the Nigeria Under-23 team in a match against Zambia, as his team went on to qualify for the 2015 All African Games.
