The CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup first round ties got underway on Tuesday 22 December, with the headline result coming from Botswana, where hosts Jwaneng Galaxy were no match for South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns.
‘Downs, the 2016 African champions, were 2-0 victors in a regional derby which was decided by goals from Mothobi Mvala and Peter Shalulile.
The two other Champions League matches on the day saw DR Congo giants AS Vita held 2-2 in Eswatini by Young Buffaloes, while Moroccan heavyweights Raja Casablanca will be more than satisfied with a 0-0 draw away to Senegal’s Teungueth.
The CAF Confederation Cup’s feature result saw South Africa’s Orlando Pirates continue their fine recent form with a 1-0 win over Sagrada Esperanca in Angola, courtesy of a strike from Thembinkosi Lorch.
Elsewhere in the second-tier continental competition, Etoile du Sahel claimed a goalless draw away to Al Mokawloon in one of two North African derbies, the other of which saw last season’s runners-up, Pyramids FC, win 1-0 over hosts Al Ittihad Tripoli.
Algeria’s JS Kabylie were narrow 1-0 victors in Niger over USGN, Burkina Faso’s Salitas achieved the same result in Sudan over Al Amal Atbara, and Zambia’s NAPSA Stars were held goalless at home by UD Songo of Mozambique.
The first round, first-leg match for both competitions will be completed on Wednesday 23 December. The return-leg games will be held on the midweek of 5-6 January 2021.
