Nigerian striker Odion Ighalo has revealed that the highlight of his time at Manchester United thus far was the derby win over Manchester City back in March.
The former Super Eagles attacker has been on loan at Old Trafford for almost a year, having joined the Red Devils on transfer deadline day at the end of January 2020.
While playing opportunities have been relatively limited – especially in the current 2020-21 campaign – Ighalo has nonetheless enjoyed his time representing United. However, one match in particular stands out.
That was United’s 2-0 win over Man City in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford on 8 March 2020. Anthony Martial put the hosts ahead on 30 minutes and the victory was sealed by a late, long-range strike from Scott McTominay.
Ighalo was on the field for the final whistle, having replaced playmaker Bruno Fernandes in the 88th minute of the match.
“That was electrifying! That was crazy! I’ve never seen an atmosphere like that before, the atmosphere that day was crazy in Old Trafford, ” Ighalo told UTD Podcast.
“When I sat down on the bench, I was watching the crowd and I was like ‘wow, this is different level’.
“Being on that pitch when we scored the second goal, I was going mental. I was jumping like I was the one who scored the goal! I did not score in the game but I was happy because the atmosphere was crazy.
“That was one of the biggest games: it’s a derby game and the fans were pleased, they were happy. That was one of the best moments in Old Trafford, for me.”
Ighalo, who has scored five goals in 23 appearances for United, will see his loan deal expire at the end of January 2021.
