Nigeria international Kenneth Omeruo has explained why he stayed put at CD Leganes despite their relegation from the Spanish La Liga.

The 27-year-old defender enjoyed regular game time at Leganes after joining the club from English giants Chelsea on a season-long loan deal in August 2018.

In August 2019, Omeruo signed for Leganes, this time on a permanent deal, ending his seven-year spell at Chelsea without playing a single competitive game for the London-based outfit.

However, Leganes were relegated to the Segunda Division at the end of the 2019/20 season and Omeruo said he remained with the Spanish side because of the opportunity the club afforded him to stabilise his career.

“It wasn’t an easy decision to stay and play in the second division,” Omeruo told AOI.

“I asked if they were going to cut my salary to 50 percent and they said yes but I told them we might have a problem but then, again I thought about it and decided to stay.”

Omeruo spent some time with Leganes, Dutch side ADO Den Haag, Turkish clubs Kasimpasa (twice) and Alanyaspor and English outfit Middlesbrough on loan from Chelsea between 2012 and 2019.

“I have lived two years in Spain and this was a club that gave me an opportunity because when I was with Chelsea they always loaned me out to several clubs and I did not really have a home that time,” he added.

“So for me, it was only fair that I risk one season in the second division to try and come back at the first ask.”

Leganes are currently placed fifth on the Segunda Division table and Omeruo is optimistic that the team will secure promotion to La Liga.

“Definitely, I wish you watch our matches, we have an amazing team; we play good football but we are unlucky most times,” he continued.

“Also, the second division is really tough but we are focused and won’t give room for any slip-ups.”

Omeruo, who boasts 52 caps for Nigeria, has played 10 league matches for Leganes this season.
