CAF Champions League title holders Al Ahly and South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns both gained comfortable progression as nine first round, second-leg matches were played across two African club competitions on Tuesday 5 January 2021.

Ahly, who won a record-extending ninth African crown in November last year under coach Pitso Mosimane, are safely through to the group stage after a 4-0 (5-0 on aggregate) win over Niger’s AS SONIDEP. Taher Mohamed, Walid Soliman, Bard Banoun and Kahraba were on target for the Red Devils.

Mosimane’s former team, Sundowns, cruised to a 3-1 (5-1 on aggregate) home win over Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy, with goals from Kermit Erasmus, Mothobi Mvala and Thapelo Morena, while their compatriots Kaizer Chiefs pulled off a 1-0 (on the day and on aggregate) win away to Angola’s Primeiro de Agosto, thanks to a strike late in the first half from Leonardo Castro.

The final team to secure a group stage place in the CAFCL was Senegal’s Teungueth FC, who held Raja Casablanca goalless away from home (for a 0-0 aggregate score) before winning the post-match penalty shootout 3-1.

In the CAF Confederation Cup, the day’s top game came from Sudan, where hosts Al Hilal Al Obeid were held 3-3 by Namungo – allowing the Tanzanian side (whose goals were scored by Stephen Sey, Blaise Bigirimana and Edward Manyama) to advance 5-3 on aggregate.

JS Kabylie, DC Motema Pembe and Coton Sport all claimed home wins to complete comfortable aggregate triumphs, while last season’s CAFCC runners-up, Pyramids, were made to sweat for a 3-2 (4-2 on aggregate) win at home to Al Ittihad Tripoli.

The feisty North African derby was decided by first-half strikes from Abdallah Said, Eric Traore and Mohamed El Gabbas.

The first round for both the Champions League and Confederation Cup will wrap up with matches across the continent on Wednesday, January 6.
