A busy Saturday in South Africa’s DStv Premiership was headlined by another win for champions Mamelodi Sundowns – as well as their Tshwane rivals SuperSport United – while beleaguered heavyweights Kaizer Chiefs suffered yet more woe.
Sundowns opened up a three-point lead at the top of the log thanks to their 2-0 win away to Baroka FC – with Lyle Lakay and Themba Zwane netting the goals – while SuperSport continued their excellent form with a 3-0 win away to TS Galaxy.
Matsatsantsa have taken 13 points from the last 15 available and defeated the Rockets thanks to two strikes from Thamsanqa Gabuza and one from Bradley Grobler, who has joined Abram Raselemane as United’s all-time leading scorer (57 goals).
Golden Arrows continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 1-0 home win over struggling Chippa United. Lindokuhle Mtshali netted the only goal as Abafana Bes’thende condemned the Chilli Boys to a sixth defeat of the campaign.
The headline result from the early-evening games was a 2-0 home defeat for Kaizer Chiefs to strugglers Maritzburg United. The Team of Choice – led by axed Chiefs mentor Ernst Middendorp – claimed their victory (and a first clean sheet of the campaign) thanks to a brace from Judas Moseamedi.
The Amakhosi, meanwhile, are just one point above the relegation zone after a seventh successive winless match in the Premiership.
Elsewhere, Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila fought back from two goals down to salvage a 2-2 draw at home to Cape Town City.
The Citizens looked on course for all three points when they established an early 2-0 advantage via a brace from Fagrie Lakay, but Vhadau Vha Damani struck back through Meshack Mapangule and substitute Thembisani Nevhulamba to claim a share of the spoils.
The DStv Premiership will wrap up its weekend round with two fixtures on Sunday, January 10: Orlando Pirates and Swallows FC will meet for a revival of the ‘original’ Soweto derby, while Bloemfontein Celtic will host AmaZulu at the Dr Molemela Stadium.
