Italian giants Napoli have confirmed that Nigerian international Victor Osimhen remains positive for Covid-19 and will repeat a test for the virus later this week.
The Super Eagles star has been sidelined from competitive action since dislocating his shoulder in his national team’s 4-4 draw with Sierra Leone in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier two months ago.
It was hoped that he would be able to return from this injury early in the New Year, but he tested positive for the coronavirus upon return from a holiday in Nigeria over the festive season.
His latest positive result, returned on Monday 11 January, means he will continue to be isolated from the rest of the Neapolitan squad as they prepare for a Coppa Italia clash with Empoli this evening.
“The molecular nasal pharyngeal swab carried out this morning on the footballer Victor Osimhen gave a positive result for Covid-19,” Napoli wrote in a statement, as quoted by Football-Italia. “The player will repeat the test this week.”
Osimhen has managed just six appearances and two goals in Serie A since his big-money move from Lille in September 2020.
