Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates returned to winning ways in the 2020-21 DStv Premiership season on a record-breaking day for SuperSport United’s Bradley Grobler on Wednesday, 13 January.
The Amakhosi broke a seven-game winless streak which stretched back to October with a 1-0 win over AmaZulu in Durban. Samir Nurkovic scored the only goal of the game in what was his first start of the season as Chiefs rose up to 10th place on the league standings, to open a four-point buffer between themselves and the relegation zone.
Pirates moved up to fourth spot, seven points behind league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, with a 3-0 win over Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila in Thohoyandou.
Deon Hotto, Gabadinho Mhango and Fortune Makaringe were on target for the Buccaneers with Thembinkosi Lorch grabbing two assists in a morale-boosting win for Josef Zinnbauer’s men who will face bottom-placed Black Leopards at the same venue on Sunday.
In Atteridgeville, SuperSport United beat Bloemfontein Celtic 2-1 to move into second and within two points of Sundowns ahead of their meeting at Lucas Moripe Stadium at the weekend.
Victor Letsoalo had pulled the teams level following Thamsanqa Gabuza’s opener but Grobler bagged a record-breaking goal to seal all three points for Matsatsantsa.
The goal, Grobler’s 58th for the club, made him SuperSport’s all-time leading goalscorer, passing the record previously held by the late Abram Raselemane.
Gabuza and Grobler have now scored a combined 13 goals between them in SuperSport’s last six fixtures with the latter the leading marksman in the division this season, with 10 goals in 10 matches.
