Sassuolo manager Roberto De Zerbi has come to the defence of Ivorian winger Jeremie Boga, hinting that the player has still not fully recovered from the effects of Covid-19.
The 24-year-old French-born player has registered two goals and two assists from 13 Serie A appearances so far this season – solid numbers, but they pale in comparison to the 11 goals and four assists from 34 appearances that Boga racked up in 2019-20.
Boga has drawn some criticism for his showings this term, but it is easily forgotten that the player contracted the coronavirus and spent no less than six weeks sidelined during the European summer – massively affecting his preparation and output for 2020-21.
De Zerbi has suggested that the Ivorian is not yet at 100 percent physically and has assured Sassuolo fans that this is not due to any lack of effort from the player.
“I agree, he has been like this [under-performing compared to last season] for a while,” De Zerbi is quoted by Football-Italia.
“I honestly think it’s just a physical issue and I really don’t believe he isn’t trying his hardest, otherwise I’d turn him inside out…”
Boga will hope to get back to something like his best when Sassuolo host Parma in a Serie A clash at Stadio Citta del Tricolore on Sunday afternoon.
