Saturday 16 January saw no less than six matches played in South Africa’s DStv Premiership, with promoted Swallows FC back on level terms with champions Mamelodi Sundowns at the top of the log, while heavyweights Kaizer Chiefs appear to have turned a corner after a second straight win.
Swallows continued their brilliant return to the top-flight league with a 1-0 win away to Baroka FC – courtesy of another goal from Ruzaigh Gamildien – taking full advantage of the 0-0 draw between Tshwane rivals SuperSport United and Sundowns earlier in the day.
The Birds and the Brazilians both have 25 points from 11 unbeaten matches since the start of the season, with the title holders occupying first place only on goal difference.
Golden Arrows are also unbeaten, seven points off the top with a game in hand, after they edged Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila 1-0 for the only home win of the day.
Kaizer Chiefs, meanwhile, look to be back on course under manager Gavin Hunt, defeating Cape Town City 2-1 away to claim successive three pointers for the first time this season.
Following on from their midweek win over AmaZulu, the Amakhosi got the better of the Citizens thanks to early goals from youngsters Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Happy Mashiane. The result sees the Soweto side rise to eighth place on the log, now just three points behind the sixth-placed Cape club.
Saturday also saw a first away win for Chippa United, as they beat TS Galaxy 1-0 at Mbombela Stadium, while Bloemfontein Celtic and Stellenbosch shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at Dr Molemela Stadium.
The DStv Premiership’s weekend action wraps up on Sunday 17 January with a KwaZulu-Natal derby between AmaZulu and Maritzburg United, and Black Leopards at home to Orlando Pirates.
