Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates failed to record wins in the DStv Premiership ahead of the biggest fixture in South African club football, the Soweto Derby.
Chiefs had to come back from behind to hold Baroka FC to a 1-1 draw in an encounter which was played at the 2010 FIFA World Cup final venue, FNB Stadium.
The deadlock was opened by Thamsanqa Masiya, who pounced and scored to make it 1-0 to Baroka after running on to Evidence Makgopa’s flicked header in the 53rd minute.
However, Amakhosi managed to level matters when Reeve Frosler’s low cross was turned home by Goodman Mosele, who netted an own goal to make it 1-1 with 14 minutes left on the clock.
Ultimately, the match ended in a 1-1 draw with Chiefs remaining seventh on the league standings, while Baroka moved up to eighth place on the table.
Meanwhile, Pirates let a lead slip to draw 1-1 with TS Galaxy in a match which took place at the Mecca of South African football, Orlando Stadium.
Bongani Sam netted his first-ever goal for the Buccaneers to make it 1-0 after being set-up by Fortune Makaringe, who had combined brilliantly with Thembinkosi Lorch in the 11th minute.
However, the lead only lasted for nine minutes as Luckyboy Mokoena’s cross was headed home by Masilake Phohlongo to make it 1-1 – beating Pirates’ Ghana international Richard Ofori hands down.
The encounter ended in a 1-1 draw and Pirates remain fifth on the standings, while Galaxy climbed up to 12th place on the log.
Pirates will now host Chiefs in the Soweto Derby encounter at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday.
