Villarreal reportedly failed in a last minute attempt to sign Amine Harit before the transfer window shut earlier this week.
According to Marca, the LaLiga club tried to complete a late swoop for the Schalke 04 playmaker on Monday, but ultimately came up short.
The Spanish outfit were reportedly keen on signing the Morocco international on-loan until the end of the 2020-21 campaign with an option to buy, but Schalke wanted an outright purchase.
Schalke’s struggles towards the end of last season carried into the current campaign. The Royal Blues have only won one Bundesliga match all season and sit bottom of the German top-flight standings, nine points from safety.
Harit, 23, has started 12 of the club’s 19 games this season and assisted five goals, three of which came in one match, a 4-0 win over Hoffenheim last month in a game in which he also found the back of the net. The result ended Schalke’s 30-game winless run in the league.
In stark contrast, Villarreal have enjoyed a stellar season under Unai Emery’s tutelage and currently occupy fifth spot on the LaLiga standings, having only lost twice all season.
