On a day of late drama in the Nedbank Cup, Kaizer Chiefs suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Richards Bay FC at FNB Stadium in Soweto on Sunday.

The Natal Rich Boyz booked their spot in the last-16 with a historic win over their more-fancied hosts following a stoppage-time winner from Siyabonga Vilane. Leonardo Castro had levelled matters for the Amakhosi, who had Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya sent off, following Thabani Dube’s first-half opener.

Elsewhere, Chippa United beat Free State Stars 4-3 on penalties (2-2 after extra-time) in a thrilling showdown in Port Elizabeth.

The Chilli Boys looked on course for victory after they had opened the scoring in the 85th minute through Riaan Hanamub, but Stars netted three minutes later to take the game into extra-time.

Ea Lla Koto then took the lead only for Chippa to hit back in the shape of an Andile Mbenyane equaliser to send the match to penalties. The Eastern Cape club duly held their nerve from the spot to emerge victorious at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

Victory secured a third win for a top-flight club over GladAfrica Championship opposition in Sunday afternoon’s fixtures with Swallows FC and Black Leopards having defeated Cape United and Jomo Cosmos respectively in their round of 32 matches.

Ovidy Karuru netted a late brace for Lidoda Duvha at Olen Park in a 2-1 win for the visitors. All three goals came in the final eight minutes of regulation time with the Zimbabwe international scoring either side of a Khethukuthula Zwane equaliser.

Swallows FC continued their strong run in the 2020-21 season with a 1-0 win over Cape United at Dobsonville Stadium. Kamohelo Mahlatsi scored the only goal of the match.

Baroka FC host Cape Town Spurs in the final round of 32 match in Polokwane on Monday evening.
