Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr says he is open to recalling Odion Ighalo back to the Super Eagles.

The 31-year-old marksman decided to retire from international football after the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Egypt.

Ighalo had helped the Super Eagles finish third in the AFCON tournament and he walked away with the Golden Boot award.

There have been several calls from fans for the return of Ighalo to the Super Eagles following his eye-catching performances for English giants Manchester United last season.

Rohr has now commented on the possibility of recalling the experienced player.

“There’s no reason not to take him if he’s doing well. The question is if he wants to come back,” Rohr said on Goal.

“We hope so because he’s an experienced player. He can be very useful to his partners. We’re waiting but firstly he has to play.”

Ighalo made his international debut for Nigeria in March 2015 against Uganda.

The Lagos-born player represented his nation at the 2018 World Cup finals and he was the highest goalscorer in the 2019 AFCON qualification campaign.

He hit the back of the net 16 times from 36 international games for Nigeria.
