Caf Champions League holders Al Ahly beat Brazilian giants Palmeiras in a penalty shoot-out on Thursday evening to claim bronze at the Fifa Club World Cup in Qatar.
Red Devils goalkeeper and captain Mohamed El-Shenawy saved the final spot-kick from midfielder Felipe Melo to seal a 3-2 win for the African champions, as they equalled their best finish of third at the global showpiece.
“Defeating the CONMEBOL (Copa Libertadores) champions is a milestone,” said Al Ahly head coach Pitso Mosimane.
“We want to thank everybody… even the groundsman who cut the grass. It’s a collective effort.”
