Senegal international Mbaye Diagne could’ve scored a hat-trick in West Bromwich Albion’s 1-1 draw at home to Manchester United according to manager Sam Allardyce.

Diagne, 29, scored his first Premier League goal two minutes into Sunday’s stalemate at the Hawthorns with a thumping header past David de Gea.

Bruno Fernandes leveled matters for the Red Devils with a brilliant volley and both teams had chances to win the game in an open second-half, with Diagne missing two gilt-edged chances for the hosts.

Talking to BBC Sport in the aftermath, Baggies boss Allardyce said that he felt the towering forward could’ve scored more on the day: “We had enough chances to make it three points.

“The sad thing for me is Mbaye Diagne could’ve had a hat-trick. That would have been a great thing for him.

“It was a super goal. He didn’t look the favourite. He missed easier chances than that today. We’ve got somebody in the box who can score us goals.

“I’m pleased with the overall performance and tactics of the team. They didn’t let their heads down when United scored with their only shot on target in the first half.

“In the last minute we needed our goalie to make sure we didn’t lose. We wouldn’t have deserved to lose.

“When you get those opportunities [to attack] you have to maximise them. We did that but the chances we had, we didn’t finish more than one,” he concluded.

A point moves West Brom two points clear of bottom place, but they remain firmly in danger of relegation — 12 points from safety.
