Achraf Hakimi has been a revelation for Internazionale in his maiden Serie A season, but it turns out the Moroccan international could have moved to Italy four years ago.
Then just a teenager starting to break into the Real Madrid first team, Hakimi was wanted by manager Maurizio Sarri at Napoli.
The player’s representative, Alejandro Camano, revealed this news to Radio Kiss Kiss, as per Football Italia.
“Hakimi could’ve been a Napoli player with Sarri,” Camano explained.
“He was only 18 years old and Sarri was the coach. We were contacted by director Cristiano Giuntoli.”
Now 22, the wing-back joined Inter for €40m from Real Madrid at the start of the 2020-21 and has registered six goals and six assists in 30 competitive matches for the Nerazzurri.
Hakimi also spent two seasons on loan at German giants Borussia Dortmund, where he scored 12 goals in 73 appearances.
It has also emerged that Real Madrid may be interested in re-signing the player as a replacement for Dani Carvajal, who is out of contract at the end of the current campaign.
Premier League clubs Arsenal and Chelsea have also been linked with the Atlas Lions star, though Inter will surely demand a massive transfer fee to part with one of their top performers.
