Wednesday’s DStv Premiership action saw Kaizer Chiefs suffer yet more woe, while leaders and defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns have moved five points clear at the head of the table following a 2-0 win over Baroka FC.
The Brazilians secured their 10th victory of the league season thanks to second-half strikes from Gaston Sirino and Peter Shalulile in the early-evening kick-off, putting clear daylight between themselves and nearest chasers SuperSport United.
Bakgaga, meanwhile, were arguably the better team for the first two thirds of the match but ultimately succumbed to the superior class of ‘Downs to suffer their seventh defeat of the season and remain in 10th place on the log.
The mid-afternoon match saw Chiefs suffer a third straight defeat across all competitions, as they were beaten 2-1 at FNB Stadium by AmaZulu.
The Amakhosi, who ended the game with 10 men and suffered the ignominy of having former player Lehlohonolo Majoro score the decisive goal, have gone four league matches without a win and remain a lowly (by their standards) ninth place on the log.
Usuthu, by contrast, have won four of their last five league matches and have risen to sixth place – seven points ahead of their vanquished opponents.
The Durban side claimed the lead in injury time at the end of the first half through Augustine Mulenga before his effort was cancelled out by a Leonardo Castro penalty midway through the second stanza. Majoro then decided the game with a masterful finish in the 86th minute.
The DStv Premiership will continue with five fixtures this coming weekend.
