Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy remains the club’s first choice, said manager Thomas Tuchel.
The Senegal international was benched for Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Newcastle United on Monday evening with record-signing Kepa Arrizabalaga offered a rare start since Mendy’s arrival at Stamford Bridge.
Mendy joined the Blues from Stade Rennes in September after Frank Lampard lost confidence in Arrizabalaga following a string of high-profile errors, but the £71-million man started between the sticks earlier this week.
Tuchel has duly come out and stated that Mendy remains Chelsea’s undisputed No.1 but that Arrizabalaga and Willy Caballero need to be ready when called upon.
“Edouard is the No 1 and deserves to be the No 1. You cannot hide your opinion, things have to be clear and you cannot be afraid of it,” Tuchel told reporters this week.
“Things have not changed, we need three strong goalkeepers and everybody ready. The goals to achieve are high at this club, we need all 22 players to be ready now. If it is for five minutes, then be ready for five minutes.”
Mendy, 28, has kept 14 clean sheets in 25 matches across all competitions for Chelsea.
