Wednesday’s action in the DStv Premiership saw SuperSport United and Orlando Pirates share the spoils in their clash at Lucas Moripe Stadium, while TS Galaxy kept up their good recent run of form by beating Bloemfontein Celtic.
The former result sees second-placed Matsatsantsa close the gap to leaders Mamelodi Sundowns to three points (though the champions now have two games in hand), while the Buccaneers move up to fourth place, a further four points back from the summit.
Pirates claimed the lead as early as the 10th minute, with Vincent Pule receiving the ball just inside the penalty area from Deon Hotto, skipping past one challenge and then scoring with a shot which deflected off defender Thatayaone Ditlhokwe and gave United goalkeeper Ronwen Williams no chance.
The second half saw SuperSport make a big improvement and they deservedly drew level in the 66th minute. Ghampani Lungu found himself in space on the left of the penalty area and fired in a low shot-cross which was sliced into his own net by Ben Motshwari.
The early kick-off at Mbombela Stadium saw Galaxy continue their strong run of form in the Premiership when they defeated Celtic 1-0.
Lindokuhle Mbatha scored the only goal of the game as the Rockets claimed a third win from their last five matches (a stretch in which they are also unbeaten) and moved up to ninth place on the log, displacing both Kaizer Chiefs and their opponents Phunya Sele Sele, who drop to 11th after a seventh loss of the campaign.
The DStv Premiership will resume next midweek, 2-3 March, with a full round of fixtures, headlined by log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns playing away to Stellenbosch FC.
