Mamelodi Sundowns and Wydad Casablanca eased to big wins in the 2020-21 Caf Champions League on Sunday.
The two giants, who have become well acquainted with one another on the continent over the last few seasons, flexed their muscles on neutral ground.
The difficulties relating to the strain of Covid-19 prevalent in South Africa forced Sundowns’ match at CR Belouizdad to be played in Tanzania while Wydad hosted Kaizer Chiefs in Burkina Faso.
The Brazilians crushed 10-man Belouizdad 5-1 at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
Victory moved the Tshwane club four points clear atop Group B after two rounds of fixtures. Themba Zwane (two), Peter Shalulile, Lebohang Maboe and Kermit Erasmus all found the back of the net for the South African champions.
Belouizdad played almost the entire match with 10-men following Chouhaib Keddad’s sending off in the third minute for a deliberate handball on the line and Sundowns made the Algerian club, whose solitary goal came through Amir Sayoud, pay.
Wydad Casablanca cruised to 4-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs at Stade du 4 Août in Ouagadougou. Mohammed Ounnajem, Ayoub El Kaabi, Simon Msuva and Yahya Jabrane all found the back of the net for the Moroccans who have now won seven matches on the spin.
It is a harsh welcome to Africa’s premier club competition for the Amakhosi who were reduced to 10-men late in the game following a second-bookable offence by Ramahlwe Mphahlele.
Victory moved Wydad up to the summit of Group C with a maximum haul of six points while Chiefs, like Belouizdad, are left on a single point after two rounds of matches.
