Saturday’s action in the DStv Premiership saw Orlando Pirates rack up a 10th successive league victory over Chippa United, Stellenbosch won the Cape Town derby, and Maritzburg United opened a little daylight between them and the bottom of the log.
The Buccaneers trumped Chippa United 3-0 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, as strikes from Deon Hotto and Ben Motshwari (as well as an own goal from Riaan Hanamub) saw them to a third win from their last four league outings, move up to second place on the log (one point behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns – having played four games more) and continue their dominance over the Chilli Boys – making it 10 straight league wins over the Eastern Cape side.
At the Dr Molemela Stadium, Bloemfontein Celtic and Maritzburg United shared the spoils in their clash, playing to a 1-1 draw thanks to goals from Thabiso Kutumela and Menzi Ndwandwe.
The result sees Phunya Sele Sele extend their winless run to four matches and remain in 11th place, while Maritzburg stay 15th but have opened up a one-point lead over bottom-of-the-log Black Leopards.
The early kick-off in the ‘Mother City’ saw Stellenbosch return to league action for the first time in more than two weeks and break a seven-game winless streak, as they defeated Cape Town City 2-1 away from home.
Ashley Du Preez scored the decisive goal early in the second half for the Maroons, while the Citizens at least saw Aubrey Ngoma net a fine strike as their victory drought in the league stretched to six games.
The DStv Premiership will continue on Sunday with two matches: Swallows FC will host Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila and Golden Arrows will visit Black Leopards.
