Former Milan player Massimo Ambrosini has praised Ivorian midfielder Franck Kessie for his influence on the team.

Kessie, 24, has emerged as one of the best central midfielders in Italian football in the past year or so, with his driving force in the ‘engine room’ proving one of the decisive factors in turning the Rossoneri from also-rans to Serie A title contenders.

The Ivory Coast international joined Milan from Atalanta in 2017, having also featured for Cesena in his senior club career.

Milan’s youthful squad has often looked to veteran striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic for inspiration this season, but Ambrosini believes that Kessie becomes the ‘main man’ when the Swede is unavailable.

“He is dominant in tranquility, it seems that he does not struggle,” the former midfield star told MilanLive, as quoted by SempreMilan. “It is the soul to which everyone clings when Ibra is not there.”

Ambrosini also hopes to see the Rossoneri solve the saga surrounding whether Hakan Calhanoglu and Gigio Donnarumma will sign new deals with the club. Their current contracts expire in June.

“The renewal of Donnarumma is essential, he is the priority. Gigio has brought several points to Milan, his possible replacement it would be a big problem because there aren’t any guys around.

“I have always defended Calhanogu even when it was not going well, in my project he is there. But for Gigio I would do anything,” he said.

Kessie will hope to star for Milan when they face Napoli in a key Serie A clash on the evening of Sunday 14 March.
