Nigeria international Paul Onuachu says he has accepted his omission from the latest Super Eagles squad.
The towering centre forward was omitted from Nigeria’s 24-man squad for the country’s 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures against Benin and Lesotho later this month.
This has come as a surprise as Onuachu has been in great scoring form in the Belgian First Division A this season.
The former FC Midtjylland player is the current top scorer in the First Division A with 25 goals from 29 matches.
Onuachu has been placed on standby by Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr as the Super Eagles look to qualify for the AFCON finals which will be hosted by Cameroon.
The 26-year-old player has promised to continue fighting for a place in the Super Eagles squad.
“It’s the coach’s decision, and I respect it,” Onuachu told Punch.
“He has the final say, and there’s nothing I can do to it, but I will do my best at all times and always fight to represent my fatherland.”
Sadiq Umar, Victor Osimhen and Kelechi Iheanacho are the three out-and-out strikers, who have been selected ahead of Onuachu in the latest squad.
The Owerri-born player has netted once in nine matches for Nigeria.
