Super Eagles call on free-scoring Paul Onuachu

A large majority of Nigerian supporters will feel somewhat vindicated following Paul Onuachu’s call-up to the national team.


The 26-year-old has been extended an invitation by head coach Gernot Rohr for back-to-back 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin and Lesotho this month, as replacement for Moses Simon.


Onuachu was initially left out of Nigeria’s 24-man squad released by Rohr, with the in-form KRC Genk star only making the standby list.


“Following the uncertainty regarding the availability of players based in France (due to COVID 19 laws guiding the country), Super Eagles Coach Gernot Rohr has extended an invitation to KRC Genk striker Paul Onuachu. Henry Onyekuru was earlier called up to replace injured Samuel Kalu,” read a statement from the NFF on Wednesday.


Onuachu has been in spectacular form in the Belgium Pro League this season. He has scored 27 goals in 31 matches across all competitions, including a hat-trick against KAS Eupen in January, which you can watch in the video below:
