Zambia and Algeria drew 3-3 in the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification Group H match at the National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka on Thursday night.

As a result, Chipolopolo failed to qualify for the finals as they remained fourth on the group standings, while Desert Eagles, who have qualified, are leading by three points.

Chipolopolo managed to contain the African champions in the opening 15 minutes of the encounter with Kabaso Chongo working hard in the defence.

However, the Desert Foxes opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Rachid Ghezzal scored to make it 1-0 to Algeria after being set-up by Islam Slimani.

The visitors were soon 2-0 up five minutes before the half-hour mark and this time it was Slimani, who found the back of the net to double Algeria’s lead.

Chipolopolo fought back and they were awarded a penalty after Patson Daka was fouled in the box and he converted the resultant penalty in the 34th minute to make it 2-1.

Algeria were able to contain Zambia in the remaining minutes of the first-half and the score was 2-1 to visitors at the interval.

Chipolopolo piled some pressure on the Desert Foxes after the restart and they equalised when Clatous Chama found the back of the net to make it 2-2 in the 52nd minute.

It was end-to-end stuff as Tunisia restore their lead three minutes later through Slimane, who completed his brace to hand Algeria a 3-2 lead with Baghdad Bounedjah providing the assist.

However, the goal did not deter the hosts as Zambia were awarded another penalty when Moses Phiri was fouled in the box with 12 minutes left on the clock.

Daka then stepped up and scored from the spot-kick to make it 3-3 in the 80th minute and the hosts pushed for the winning goal in the closing stages of the game.

However, Algeria stood firm at the back and ultimately, the match ended in a 3-3 draw on the night.
