Comoros, Gambia make history in AFCON qualifiers

Gambia and Comoros both qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in their history on Thursday.


The Scorpions of Gambia beat Angola 1-0 in a Group D match in Bakau, while Comoros held Togo to a 0-0 draw in Moroni.


Egypt and Gabon also booked their places in the finals after drawing 1-1 with Kenya and defeating DR Congo 3-0 respectively on the day.


However, DR Congo and Zambia will be among the top teams which will be missing in next year’s tournament after they failed to win on Thursday.


Zambia drew 3-3 with Algeria in Lusaka despite their star striker Patson Daka scoring twice on the night.


Ghana drew 1-1 with South Africa in Johannesburg, where a Mohammed Kudus goal for the Black Stars was responded to by Percy Tau.


While Zimbabwe will secure a place if they win in Botswana thanks to Perfect Chikwende’s first-half goal which earned the Warriors a 1-0 victory.


Lastly, Equatorial Guinea also qualified for the finals after securing a 1-0 win over Tanzania in Malabo.
