Cape Town City will be under pressure to end their winless run in the DStv Premiership when they host SuperSport United in one of five matches played across South Africa’s top flight this weekend.
City have gone eight league matches without a victory and are in danger of slipping out of the top half of the log in the near future if they don’t end their drought, with the first chance to do so arriving on Saturday afternoon when SuperSport (who themselves have gone five without a win) come to the Cape Town Stadium.
“We created chances, but the last ball was also the problem,” said coach Jan Olde Riekerink after City’s last outing, a 0-0 draw with Baroka FC. “That has to do with confidence and quality.”
A team certainly not lacking in confidence and quality is AmaZulu, who will chase a sixth straight win when they face hosts Stellenbosch FC in the weekend’s opening match on Friday evening.
Benni McCarthy’s team will rise to second place on the standings if they avoid defeat at the Danie Craven Stadium – little wonder the former Bafana Bafana striker has been tipped to become the next national team coach.
Golden Arrows could reclaim second spot when they host Bloemfontein Celtic in the first of two matches on Sunday, while the other sees both Swallows FC and Black Leopards desperate for a victory when they meet at Dobsonville Stadium.
The Birds, after their brilliant start to the campaign, have now gone nine league games without a win, while Lidoda Duvha find themselves at the bottom of the log and need to start collecting positive results if they are to have any hope of avoiding a drop to the second tier.
“It’s in our character, we don’t give up, but sometimes it’s not good for the heart,” said Swallows coach Brandon Truter after a last-gasp equaliser in their 1-1 draw with Golden Arrows last weekend. “We managed to sneak a point again but it’s not good enough at home, we should have picked up three points.”
The weekend also sees TS Galaxy looking to avoid a third straight defeat when they host relegation-threatened Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila on Saturday evening.
