Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez has revealed that confidence was key to Manchester City reaching the Uefa Champions League semi-finals.
The Premier League leaders booked their spot in the final four with a 4-2 aggregate win over Borussia Dortmund, but it wasn’t as straightforward of a tie for City as many had initially predicted.
Jude Bellingham’s early goal put Dortmund ahead in the second-leg and on aggregate by virtue of away goals before Mahrez’s clinical penalty fired the Cityzens back in the driving seat.
Phil Foden then wrapped up victory for Pep Guardiola’s men as they set up a meeting with Paris Saint-Germain for a place in the final.
“We played good after the goal we conceded, we said (at half-time) we were going to score,” Mahrez, 30, said.
“We were very confident about the second half, we could’ve scored in the first half, I had one, the defender saved it, Kevin (De Bruyne) had one or two.
“We were very confident and that’s why we are through now.
“I don’t think we started very good but we came back after the goal, played good, created chances and at the end we had the opportunities to score and we did it.”
