Veteran coach Muhsin Ertugral has backed former club Kaizer Chiefs to go deep in the CAF Champions League this season.
The South African side recently made history by qualifying for the competition’s quarterfinals for the first time, with their come-from-behind 2-2 draw away to Horoya AC earlier this month seeing them join compatriot club Mamelodi Sundowns, Wydad Casablanca, Esperance de Tunis, Simba SC, CR Belouizdad, Al Ahly and MC Alger in the last eight.
Erturgal, who guided Chiefs to the 2001 African Cup Winners’ Cup, believes they can achieve great things under current coach Gavin Hunt – despite their struggles domestically.
“Firstly congratulations to the whole team for being in the knockout stages, its a huge thing for the club and now, anything can happen,” Ertugral is quoted by Soccer Laduma.
“The season has been a challenge but these type of experience[s] can actually get the team together and build a momentum. Hopefully these will take the team to a good finishing line and better things under Hunt.”
Chiefs will know their quarterfinal opponents when the draw for the knockout stage is conducted at the CAF headquarters in Cairo on April 30.
