Kaizer Chiefs ended the unbeaten run of DStv Premiership leaders Mamelodi Sundowns with a come-from-behind 2-1 win in one of two matches played in South Africa’s top flight on Sunday 25 April.
The Brazilians looked on course to continue their serene progress at the top of the log when Gaston Sirino had them 1-0 up at half time, but the Amakhosi came to life in the second stanza and deservedly claimed victory thanks to an own goal from Musa Lebusa and a fine strike by substitute Dumisani Zuma.
The victory at Loftus Versfeld not only eases some of the pressure on under-fire Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt, but also sees the Soweto side rise to eighth place on the log. ‘Downs remain in charge of the title race (three points clear at the top, with two games in hand) but this defeat – coming a week after their shock exit from the Nedbank Cup at the hands of Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila – shows that the Brazilians are finally feeling the strain of a congested fixture list.
Sunday also had Chippa United and Golden Arrows playing to a goalless stalemate in the Eastern Cape: the result means the Chilli Boys stay in the relegation playoff zone, while Abafana Bes’thende missed out on the chance to go second on the log ahead of Durban rivals AmaZulu.
The DStv Premiership will resume with a midweek slate of seven games on Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 April, headlined by a potential thriller between in-form teams Cape Town City and AmaZulu.
