Senegal international Edouard Mendy says Chelsea legend Petr Cech is the best person to talk to in preparation for penalties in the UEFA Champions League.
This is because Cech’s goalkeeping heroics in the penalty shoot-out inspired Chelsea to a 4-3 win over German giants Bayern Munich after a 1-1 draw in the 2012 Champions League final.
The former Czech Republic international, who is now Chelsea’s technical/performance advisor, saved Arjen Robben’s penalty in extra time and he went on to deny Ivica Olic and Bastian Schweinsteiger during the penalty shoot-out.
Chelsea are set to face Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final second-leg encounter at home on May 5 after the first-leg clash ended in a 1-1 draw in Spain on Tuesday.
“I haven’t spoken with him about it, actually. I have spoken to him about a lot, but not that,” Mendy told the club website.
“I have memories of the penalties he saved for Chelsea, of course, because they helped the club win the Champions League.
“So it’s clear he will be the best person to speak to in preparation!”
Mendy has impressed in his debut season with Chelsea having kept seven clean sheets in 10 Champions League appearances having joined the English giants from French side Rennes in September 2020.
The winner between Chelsea and Madrid on aggregate will face either English giants Manchester City or French champions Paris Saint Germain (PSG) in the final.
