On the day of her 25th birthday, we look back at Thembi Kgatlana’s iconic FIFA Women’s World Cup goal.
The Banyana Banyana forward remains the only South African women to score a World Cup goal, following her strike at the 2019 showpiece in France.
Kgatlana fired South Africa to a first World Cup appearance with five goals at the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations.
She then followed that up with the opener in Banyana Banyana’s eventual 3-1 loss to Spain in Le Havre.
The tournament itself proved a baptism of fire for the South African women with a 1-0 loss to China followed by a 4-0 defeat to Germany in their final Group B fixture.
