Nigerian striker Umar Sadiq says he would rather gain promotion to La Liga with Almeria rather than win the Pichichi award for being the top scorer in Spain’s second tier division.
Sadiq has netted 18 league goals to help his side sit in a healthy third place on the standings – with promotion attainable either via automatic places or the playoffs.
The Nigerian is only four goals behind Raul de Tomas in the race for the Segunda Division’s Pichichi with five rounds of the season remaining, but he is not concerned with the prize.
“Individually, I am satisfied with the number of goals I have achieved, but in reality, the most important thing for me, the primary objective, is promotion to First Division [La Liga],” he is quoted by Soccernet.ng.
“And we are going to fight for it even through the playoffs.”
He added, “I do not continuously look at the Pichichi data. It would be good to achieve it, but what I focus the most on is not so much on scoring, but on the team doing it [gaining promotion].
“I like to give assists and score points for the team. If I succeed and help the team reach its goal, I would be very happy with it.”
Almeria and Sadiq will next be in Segunda Division action when they travel to Tenerife for a match on Friday night.
