Kaizer Chiefs’ miserable DStv Premiership season continued on Wednesday, as they were held 1-1 by Swallows FC in one of five matches played across South Africa’s top flight.
The Amakhosi remain outside of the top half of the log after their early evening draw with Swallows at FNB Stadium – which saw goals from Kagiso Malinga and Leonardo Castro – meaning Chiefs have gone four games without a win, while the Birds have racked up five straight 1-1 results and equalled the record for the most draws (17) in a single season.
The afternoon matches on Wednesday saw a big gain for Maritzburg United, who claimed a thrilling 3-2 home win over KwaZulu-Natal rivals Golden Arrows – thanks to goals from Tebogo Tlolane, Thabiso Kutumela and Bongokuhle Hlongwane – to move three points clear of the relegation playoff berth.
That spot is currently held by Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila, who succumbed at Lucas Moripe Stadium at the hands of SuperSport United. The only goal was netted by Bradley Grobler, as the new Nedbank Cup champions were quickly brought back down to earth.
Level on points with TTM is Chippa United, after they could only manage a 0-0 draw against bottom-of-the-log Black Leopards at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
Wednesday also saw Bloemfontein Celtic and Cape Town City draw 0-0 at Dr Molemela Stadium, with the result seeing Phunya Sele Sele creep ever closer to trouble: they are one of five teams covered by just three points from positions 11 to 15.
The DStv Premiership will continue with one match this weekend, as Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila host Maritzburg United at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on the afternoon of Saturday 15 May.
