Hearts of Oak coach Samuel Boadu has talked down the prospect of his team winning the 2020-21 Ghana Premier League title.

Hearts went to the top of the log this past weekend when they defeated Berekum Chelsea 2-0, with the result seeing them placed two points clear of nearest chasers Asante Kotoko who could only draw 0-0 at Aduana Stars.

The Phobians are well placed to secure a first league title since 2009, but Boadu insists they should not get ahead of themselves.

“We have seven more matches to go, we are taking one game at a time; we are not competing with anybody,” the coach is quoted by the Ghanaian Times.

Boadu did reveal, however, that the game against Chelsea was the toughest he has experienced since taking charge of Hearts earlier this year.

“The early goal settled the nerves of my players and allowed them to grow into the game and when the second goal came, we knew we were on course for another victory,” he explained.

“Berekum Chelsea is a very good team. They came to prove a point. Their position on the league table is not good enough, hence the fight to survive.”

Meanwhile, Kotoko coach Mariano Baretto has rejected the notion that they are cracking under pressure.

The Porcupine Warriors’ mentor says that his side has their fate in their own hands, given that they will face Hearts of Oak in a potential title decider in early July.

“We would have been at the top if we had maintained our winning run but we are behind [Hearts], separated by only two points and [with] a game against them,” Baretto told the Ghanaian Times.

He added, “Hearts and Kotoko have that history of competing for the title. They have the biggest fan bases in Ghana and when they go head-to-head for the title, you expect people to talk about pressure.”
