Zesco United are 90 minutes away from their ninth league title this Sunday when they host relegation battling Napsa Stars at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
Mumamba Numba’s side needs a victory to attain an unassailable 64 points with three matches in hand and currently enjoy an eight point lead over second placed Zanaco who have 53 points with three games left to play.
Zesco and Napsa finished 1-1 in the first leg on November 1 in Lusaka and Numba knows they cannot afford to slip-up this weekend especially after a nervy last five games in which they have won two and lost three matches.
“Our preparations for this game are on course and we have clearly told our boys to take this fixture like a final,” Numba said.
“This is a very crucial game as it will have an implication on whether we are crowned champions or not.”
Victory would see Numba end his debut season on a high note following his appointment last September after his predecessor George Lwandamina failed to retain the title in the 2019/2020 race that they surrendered to Nkana.
This would also be Numba’s second FAZ Super League title after guiding Zanaco to the 2016 championship.
Zesco, though, have already clinched a 2021/2022 CAF Champions League berth with their guaranteed top two finish and are so far the only side to have confirmed their top four continental ticket.
“We want to conclude our business as soon as possible so that we concentrate on preparations for continental football,” Numba said.
Meanwhile, at the opposite end of the table, the match also presents itself as a massive trail of Napsa’s survival hopes.
Third from bottom, Napsa, have lost their last five successive matches and must collect all nine points in their remaining fixtures to try and push their survival hopes across the finish line.
