Morocco’s first-choice goalkeeper Yassine Bounou believes the Atlas Lions can win next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) titles in Cameroon.
The Atlas Lions qualified for the continental tournament after dominating their qualifying group (Group E) – winning four games and drawing two.
However, the last time Morocco won the AFCON title was in 1976 and their last appearance in the final was in 2004 when they lost to Tunisia.
Bounou, who is on the books of Spanish side Sevilla FC, is confident Vahid Halilhodzic’s side can dominate the continent again in next year’s finals.
“We are looking forward to that with great optimism, we have a lot of great players,” Bounou told Goal.
“And the team is currently able to fight and compete in order to reach the top and win the African Cup of Nations.”
The Atlas Lions will start their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign in September 2021 as they look to book their place in the finals which will be hosted by Qatar.
The 30-year-old believes that Morocco can reach the World Cup finals for the sixth time having qualified for the 2018 tournament.
“The same thing, we are confident that the Moroccan team will be among the 5 teams that will qualify for Qatar,” he said.
“But it is clear that there is a very good rise in the level of other teams, and the most important goal is to reach the World Cup.”
Bounou has played 28 international matches for Morocco thus far.
