Zesco United coach Mumamba Numba has attributed his sides’ recent ten-match unbeaten spell as the cornerstone of their 2020/2021 FAZ Super League title success.
The Ndola side on Sunday collected a 2-0 home win over Napsa Stars at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola to clinch their ninth league title and reclaim the crown they relinquished to Nkana last season.
Striker Jesse Were and midfielder Kelvin Kampamba struck in the 41st and 80th minutes to secure Zesco the three points they needed to end this season’s title race.
Zesco won the league title with an unassailable 64 points with three matches to spare and are currently eleven points ahead of second placed Zanaco.
“We are very happy that we have managed to lift the championship. I think it has been quite a competitive season but we made a difference in the ten-game unbeaten run and today we have been confirmed as the 2020/2021 league champions,” Numba said.
Zesco enjoyed a great spell from early February well into the start of May that saw them go on a ten-match winning run before hitting turbulence in their last six games in which they lost three games and collected as many wins.
But Zesco kept they nerve in their last two games to collect maximum six points they needed to cross the finish.
Sunday’s victory also saw Zesco tied on nine titles with Zambia’s second most successful club Mufulira Wanderers but the duo is four wins behind Nkana.
