Zanaco have said they will not do ailing former FAZ Super League champions Nkana any favours in Wednesday clash at Sunset Stadium in Lusaka.
Nkana and Zanaco who have three matches each left to play head into the match with considerable pressure at opposite ends of the table.
Fourth from bottom Nkana are facing the serious threat of relegation and are battling to collect maximum points in their final games to avoid going down just a season after winning an unprecedented thirteenth league title.
The record FAZ Super League champions head into the match hoping to avoid back-to-back defeats after losing 3-2 on Saturday down the road in Kafue to promoted Young Green Eagles.
Young Eagles eased their own relegation woes with that victory to move to number 10 and one point above the projected survival threshold to 42 points, five points more than Nkana.
Nkana coach Beston Chambeshi has taken a holistic viewpoint heading into the Zanaco game.
“We need to survive and we have seen the character in this team. The boys are not losing hope and we will see how we will handle the last three games,” Chambeshi said.
“For sure we need to pick nine points in all the games.”
Second placed Zanaco on the other hand have pride and prestige to play for after Zesco United wrapped-up the FAZ Super League title on Sunday with three games to spare.
Zanaco’s sole focus now is cementing the runners-up berth to join Zesco in the CAF Champions League next season.
“Our main objective was to win the league, unfortunately we haven’t achieved that,” Zanaco assistant coach Henry Banda said.
“It is up to us now to redeem ourselves and make sure we clinch second position so that we qualify to the CAF Champions League.”
“We won’t underestimate Nkana. We have to respect them, they are a big team, and they are desperate to win, so we have to approach this game with a lot of energy so that we can get the maximum points.”
Zanaco have been boosted by the return of their top scorers of Moses Phiri and Roger Kola from Chipolopolo duty with the former hoping to add to his 17 goals so far with an eye on the 2020/2021 golden boot.
