Defending champions Al Ahly will take a narrow lead into their 2020/21 CAF Champions League semifinal second-leg match against Esperance de Tunis following a 1-0 win at Stade Olympique de Rades (Stade Hammadi Agrebi) on Saturday.
Mohamed Sherif netted the match winner for Pitso Mosimane’s troops in Tunisia.
The match started an hour later than scheduled after the Tunisian police fired ‘gas bombs’ due to clashes with Esperance fans, which resulted in the Al Ahly players having to abandon their warm-up routine amid a struggle to breathe.
Al Ahly had the ball in the back of the net on the half-hour mark through Sherif but his attempt was chalked off for offside after a VAR review.
Mohamed El-Shenawy was then called into action to deny the hosts with a fantastic save to keep the game deadlocked at 0-0 heading into the half-time break.
Sherif scored what could prove to be a vital away goal for the nine-time champions in the 67th minute of the match. Aliou Dieng burst forward from deep before playing a precise through ball into the path of Sherif who hit the post with his first attempt before passing the ball into an empty net with his second.
The second-leg is set to take place at Al Salam Stadium in Cairo on Saturday, 26 June.
The aggregate winner will face either Wydad Casablanca or Kaizer Chiefs in this year’s final.
