Barcelona legend Samuel Eto’o has raised eyebrows by claiming that he would sign outgoing Real Madrid player Sergio Ramos for the Catalan club if he could.
Ramos is set to leave Real ahead of the 2021-22 season, having spent 16 years at the capital city giants. The 35-year-old amassed over 650 appearances for ‘Los Blancos’ and helped them win five La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions Leagues.
Ramos is a bonafide club legend at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu but one of the players most hated by supporters of other La Liga clubs.
Which makes it all the more surprising that Eto’o admits he would love to see Ramos in the ‘Blaugrana’ of Barcelona.
The Cameroonian, who started his professional career at Real Madrid but ended up becoming a Barca star in the mid-to-late 2000s, admits that this is highly unlikely to happen and reckons that Ramos will end up at French giants Paris Saint-Germain.
“Hopefully Sergio goes to PSG. If I could sign him for Barca, I would,” Eto’o told AS, as quoted by Barca Universal.
“If he goes to PSG, I will be happy and I know that he will help us win the Champions League, which is proving very difficult for us.”
Eto’o also spoke about the contract situation of former teammate and current Barcelona captain Lionel Messi. The 33-year-old’s current deal runs out in a week but the Cameroonian is hopeful that the two parties reach an agreement.
“I know that Messi loves Barcelona, that he has no problems and that it is not a question of money. The only thing is the project, which has to be reliable and I know that Joan [Laporta, the new president] is working on that,” explained Eto’o.
“He has to enjoy the time he has left, football owes it to him, not just Barca. He has given us everything, he has to enjoy it and win titles. Messi is God and when you have a God you just have to admire him.”
