Veteran Zambia number one and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene has received a surprise recall for Chipolpolo’s COSAFA Cup title defence.
Mweene headlines Chipolopolo’s provisional 30-member 2021 COSAFA Cup team unveiled on June 25 by coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic that has a total of seven call-ups from the SA PSL.
Should Mweene return, he would end a three-year Chipolopolo exile.
Mweene has not played for Zambia since a 2019 AFCON qualifier on November 18, 2018 that Chipolopolo lost 1-0 away to Mozambique in Maputo.
Also on the list is the PSL quartet of Amazulu forward Augustine Mulenga, Cape Town City’s Justin Shonga, SuperSport United’s Gamphani Lungu and Black Leopards midfielder Roderick Kabwe who were all not part Chipolopolo’s June three-nation friendly tour of Senegal, Benin and Sudan.
TP Mazembe defender Kabaso Chongo, who also missed the friendly tour, is in the team.
Meanwhile, Micho has handed a debut call-up to 19-year striker Jimmy Mukeya of demoted Napsa Stars.
Mukeya has had a great second season with Napsa since he was promoted from their youth team and is the clubs top scorer this term with nine competitive goals.
Eight of those came in the league and the other in the CAF Confederation Cup.
But Mukeya’s club mate and defender Luka Banda is not on the list after his earlier omission from the June tour.
Chipolopolo are in Group B at the COSAFA Cup that South Africa will host from July 6-18 at Nelson Mandela Bay where they will face Comoros, Malawi and Madagascar.
Zambia will kick off their COSAFA Cup defence on July 7 against Comoros.
