Malawi have been hit by the news that no less than eight of their players have tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of the Cosafa Cup tournament next month.
Eight players and second assistant coach Bob Mpinganjira returned positive results in the team camp in Blantyre.
The players are Brightone Munthali, Chikondi Kamanga, Stain Dave, Gomezgani Chirwa, Yamikani Chester, Peter Cholopi, Anthony Mfune and Gaddie Chirwa.
Malawi FA president Walter Nyamilandu told the Nyasa Times that it is devastating to lose these players, who will be barred from travelling to tournament hosts South Africa this coming weekend.
“It is a tragic situation, but we have to do what we must and everyone is ready for the challenge,” said Nyamilandu.
“In the meantime we are trying to focus on both mental and physical agility. Everyone in the team is working hard for the games.”
Nyamilandu said that he has all the hope that players who have tested positive for Covid-19 will recover and return to the team in the future.
“We wish all the players who have tested positive to Covid well and looking forward to having them back in the team as soon as possible,” he added.
Flames coach Meck Mwase in a separate interview said: “It is a difficult situation but we we are ready and equal to the task and we will give our best.”
The Cosafa Cup gets underway on Tuesday 6 July and will run until Sunday 18 July in a bio-secure ‘bubble’ in Nelson Mandela Bay.
