Ivorian star Franck Kessie is set to miss Milan’s pre-season campaign after being included in his country’s squad for the upcoming Olympic Games.
The U-23 Elephants will come up against Saudi Arabia, Brazil and Germany in the group stage of the men’s competition in Tokyo – which runs from July 21 to August 7.
Kessie has been included in Ivory Coast’s squad as one of the overage players, thus he will miss Milan’s pre-season campaign that starts on July 8, with the new Serie A season set to get underway on August 22.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Kessie informed the club after a meeting with the U-23 Ivory Coast national team coach Patrice Beaumelle.
The 24-year-old player’s participation at the Games means he will spend a significant amount of time away from his club in the coming months, as he will also surely feature for the senior Ivory Coast team at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon in early 2022.
And Kessie’s contract situation at the Rossoneri remains up in the air. His current deal expires at the end of the 2021-22 campaign, with the club having reportedly offered him a €4m-a-year contract to extend.
Yet Gazzetta claim that the player wants €6m and there are no meetings scheduled with his agent in the near future.
Arsenal are reportedly interested in Kessie’s signature, and Milan will not want to see him depart the club as a free agent next year, as has happened with Gigio Donnarumma and Hakan Calhanoglu.
